Indigenous resistance

This article talks about the resistance of the native American people, in this case the Salish people, to being assimilated in the colonialist world. The strategy that was employed was separating the indigenous peoples from their lands and culture to better bring them into the colonialist world. These schools required that these people leave their native land since their land was what created their culture to begin with. The article talks about how this continues even to this day with the strong focus on urbanization and the gravitation away from the earth towards the cities. The rules against the natives speaking their own tongue would be a major handicap on teaching the kids about their culture. I believe that there was no need to make the native give up their culture. It is possible for them to keep their own individual culture and still being able to deal with other cultures. It is also wrong to force the natives to live on reservations when we were the ones to force them off of their land in the first place.
